Certified Nursing Assistant (Medication Aide) CNA-M

Certified Nursing Assistant – Medications (CNA‐Ms) performs all functions of CNAs, plus provides medication administration performed under the direction of an on‐site supervisory nurse. 

CNA Work Settings and Populations Served

• Works in a variety of settings, including nursing facilities, assisted living or residential care settings, adult day programs, psychiatric settings, county jails & state correctional institutions, and physicians’ offices.
• Administers selected non‐injectable medications to patients 4 years of age or older.

Hiring Requirements

A person must be listed as “active” on the Certified Nursing Assistant and Direct car Worker Registry (CNA Registry). 

A  background check and certain types of criminal convictions may prohibit employment as a CNA.   

A person may not work as a CNA if the CNA Registry shows they have a substantiated finding of abuse or neglect or misappropriation of property of a client, p

Training Requirements

• Be certified as a CNA in Maine and active on the CNA registry
• Have completed 10th grade (or equivalent competency)
• Successfully complete the 120‐hour CNA-M Training Program
• Have completed the equivalent of at least one year of full‐time employment as a CNA
• Comply with your employer’s requirements for ongoing training and competency
